Lost in Europe: Part Two - Germany and Austria

We arrived in Koln, Germany so excited to meet Jen's cousin Ron and his girlfriend! They were both still working when our train arrived, so they told us to hang out, check out the city, and they would meet us when they could. We decided to leave the day up to fate and decided to just get lost....

st.

After roaming the streets of downtown Koln, we ventured off onto a less busy street and saw a clean, quiet, and quaint wine bar named Vintage. We popped in, chose a seat and ordered a bottle of white...

A few glasses in, we noticed two well dressed, nice looking business men walk in and order a bottle of wine and a plate of fresh fruits and cheeses. Until this point, we had been saving our Euros by sharing dinners, loading up on any free breakfasts, and skipping meals when we could. Needless to say, we were probably staring at this plate of nibbles like two starving wanderers would a steak dinner.

Long story short, the guys asked if we would like to join them. They spoke English well, told us they were shoes salesmen, and welcomed us to Germany with a nice bottle of champagne and our own plate of fruits and cheese. Pretty sure we downed that thing faster than Jen could say Dirk Nowitzki... (inside joke that I had to throw in). :)

A few hours and a few photo ops later, Jen's family arrived at Vintage to take us home. The guys asked us if we would all would like to go to the Eros concert later that night. Of course, Jen and I had no idea who Eros was, but Ron's girlfriend was flipping out! Apparently, he's a pretty big deal over the pond. We said sure, got their business cards so we could get a hold of them later and were on our way. As we left, we looked at the card and found out we'd been hanging out with Alex Birkenstock (owner and CEO of Birkenstock...yup, the shoe). haha.

On our way back to the house and a little light in our soles, we appreciated the scenery and snapped a few pics. Looking back, I have no idea where we were, but we had fun!

We had just enough time to drop our backpacks off, change clothes, and grab the train to the concert hall!

No telling how many hours we had been up at this point, and after an eventful day coupled with still being jet lagged, we were spent! Although, we were having the time of our lives, it didn't take too many songs that we didn't know, or could understand for that matter, before we were out....I'll let the pics speak for themselves!

Not sure how long we slept, but it was all downhill from here. (Jen- remember your love for the New England Patriots?? haha) Nonetheless, this does go down in history as one of my most favorite days, and it was allll left to chance! The best days seem to come along when you don't have expectations and you just let life take it's course...

The next few days in Germany we saw and did some incredible things. We had a great time hanging out in the local scene and touring the Dali museum, the Lindt chocolate factory, and the Dom!

It was time to pull a Heidi and say Auf Wiedersehen to Germany. We were off to my favorite country, Italy, but decided to stop in Vienna for a day of sight seeing...

We took a night train and had 4 smelly European roomies. Not my favorite part of the trip, but definitely an experience. These cabins (and "beds") are tiny!!

We arrived in Vienna early in the morning and hit the ground running. We tried a bus tour against our will and fell asleep, did a little shopping at H&M, saw some important looking buildings, visited a famous church, and ate the special dessert at some famous hotel....you can really tell I remember a lot! ha.

But the best thing we did was visit Schonbrunn Palace. This place was beautiful...

Vienna was a beautiful city and I wish we could have stayed longer, but Italy and it's food was calling my name...

Lost in Europe: Part One- London and Amsterdam

One of my best girl friends and I embarked on a journey (and it was definitely just that) to Europe in May of 2006. This was my 2nd time to travel over the pond and I was looking forward to the way we had planned to do it ~ our plan was to have NO plan!

Some things fell into our lap that we would have never come across if we had been on a scheduled tour and then again we definitely had a few "holy crap, what do we do now?!?" moments, but all in all, it was an amazing trip! Even with all of the hiccups, it was perfectly imperfect.

We began the journey in London, England with backpacks as big as our dreams...

....And our B & B as big as our wallets. ;)

We hung out in a park for awhile breathing in the crisp London air.

And of course strolled by Big Ben and the London Eye.

We hung out in London for a few days and then it was off to Paris! or so we thought...Apparently there was a huge futball game going on in Paris and Eurostar tickets were 5 times the normal rate. Without having any reservations or any plan, we decided to reroute the itinerary we had,or lack there of, to Amsterdam. I mean, why not?!? We found a bus that would take us there in only 10 hours! ha.

A quick pit stop in Brussels and then we were back on the road....

We arrived in Amsterdam at 12:30am with no where to go and more importantly no where to sleep. A couple pieces of pizza later and with the help of fellow backpackers we met in the pizzeria, it ended up being one of our favorite places! The city of bikes...and we were up for the challenge.

We met some really fun people in our hostile ~ The Bulldog. Thank goodness they had a couple extra beds left for us at 4am! We were clearly still jet lagged but were determined to be up at the break of dawn to take in everything this city had to offer. Of course we had to take a quick stroll through the red light district since our hostile was right around the corner from it. We couldn't take pictures, but it's probably for the best. Not sure I want to remember those scenes anyways. I was offered drugs more times in one hour than I was told to just say no in my entire life. Crazy, crazy city at night....not my cup of tea but part of the experience I suppose...

We decided to rent bikes the next day and really try to see the city as a local sees it...We passed windmills, canals, Anne Frank's home, coffee shops and coooffeeeshops.

We stopped for lunch to try an authentic Dutch meal...Still not sure what we ate.

The BEST dessert in the city at Renee's! Chocolate covered waffles and carmel laced ice cream! YUM ;)

Yup, in true tourist form, we definitely took the Heineken tour and partook in a few tastings as well...

Our favorite coffee shop, that served coffee, for people watching. We sipped the best green tea we'd ever drank after tons of walking at the Heineken and Van Gogh museuems!

I absolutely loved Amsterdam, but now it was time to meet up with Jen's "family" in Germany. We were off to Koln and had no idea what we were about to get ourselves into...
